We’re all spending more time at home than we have in years. Here are 10 simple ideas to spruce up your space. Oh…did we mention that it will cost you nothing and you don’t need to leave the house?
1. Add Flowers –
Go out to your yard, and create your own bouquet. Be creative…use materials like tree branches, shrubs, wildflowers, or flowers you might already have in your garden. Find old vases in your cabinets, matched or unmatched, it doesn’t matter!
2. Move the Knickknacks
Take everything off your shelves (dust it) and move it! Rearrange things from shelves to tables, one room to another. Before you know it, you’ll feel like you have all new stuff!
3. Switch out the Pillows
Mix up the pillows or add a throw blanket to your sofa to create a different look. You may even have some hiding in a linen closet that you haven’t used in a while. Pull them out! It might just do the trick for freshening up your space.
4. Go Shopping in your Attic
Or your storage unit, or your garage. Maybe there are furnishings or pieces you put away years ago that can be pulled out and re-purposed in your space. This is the perfect time to hunt through things you already own. It’s like a treasure chest in there!
5. Create a Wall Collection
You already have the framed photos, artwork, clocks and hanging shelves. Reconfigure these items into a wall collection. Use your imagination and creativity…the possibilities are endless!
6. Clean up the Kitchen
Step back and take a good hard look at your kitchen. Chances are, there is a lot of unnecessary stuff cluttering the counters and surfaces. This clutter detracts and distracts from your gorgeous kitchen. Remove it, put it away, or hide it, then wipe down the counters and surfaces. Only put back the most basic items that both look good and you will use.
7. Paint your Personal Mantra
Have a little leftover paint in the garage? Some scrap wood? Choose your tagline, or favorite quote and have a go at painting it! Experiment with applying paint or stain and wiping off with a rag before writing your motto. We like this one, but we’re obviously biased.
8. Create an Outdoor Living Room
Gather up your outdoor furniture, even if it doesn’t match. Choose an area in the yard to create a little, defined living space. It doesn’t have to be fancy. While we’re sheltering in place, why not utilize as much space as possible, inside and out? Work, dine, or simply read a good book. Bonus—raid your Christmas stuff for white twinkle lights and hang them over your outdoor space to make it charming at nighttime, too!
9. Got Yard Art?
Head outside and take a look around. There’s a good chance you have some yard art that might be hiding behind overgrown bushes. Pull it out and relocate it. Maybe you’ve got an old kid’s wagon in the garage. Use it as a planter. Look for ways to up-cycle pieces you already own. Make them, and your outdoor space new again.
10. Don’t Forget Fido, Or Fluffy, Or Bob!
We can’t leave out the most important members of the family. Spruce up your pet’s space by laundering their beds. If you’re handy with a sewing machine, sew them a new one. Paint or decorate the dog (or cat’s) house. Collect and store their toys in a cute basket. We especially love this tip because let’s face it…making your dog or cat happy makes you happy. So spread the joy!
